The challenge
When Arriva removed conductors from Stockholm’s light-rail services and the Nockebybanan tram line, the need for a reliable safety solution for onboard staff grew significantly. The sense of security once provided by the presence of conductors now had to be replaced by a technical solution that both employees and management could fully rely on.
They required a modern system that would give the traffic control centre complete visibility while also making it easy for staff to quickly alert colleagues or request assistance whenever needed.
The solution
Arriva chose to implement Crystal Alarm’s safety system for all their tram personnel. The solution combines user-friendly operation with robust functionality and a clear, reliable alarm management process.
- Mobile alarms: Staff can activate alarms directly from their work phones by pressing the ON/OFF button several times.
- Crystal Button: A discreet Bluetooth remote that allows alarms to be triggered without using the phone, designed to minimise the risk of false alarms.
- Alarm control center: All alarms are received by the traffic control team in Ulvsunda, who can immediately see who has raised the alarm and where they are located.
- GPS positioning: Each alarm includes live position data that is continuously updated if the individual moves.
- Audio monitoring: When an alarm is triggered, the phone’s microphone is automatically activated, allowing traffic control to listen to background audio and quickly assess the situation.
The impact
With Crystal Alarm, Arriva has significantly enhanced everyday safety for both employees and the traffic control centre. The system has proven to be both user-friendly as well as highly reliable, while supporting structured follow-ups and evaluations of test alarms to ensure that all routines run smoothly.
